Tuesday 13 May from 6:30pm to 7:30pm
Don’t miss the chance to hear from esteemed Emeritus Professor Michael Atherton AM, renowned Australian musician, composer, academic and author. Join him in conversation as he shares inspiring stories and insights about his work, life and creative passion.
Born in Merseyside with Welsh, Irish, and German heritage, Michael migrated to Sydney in 1965, at the age of fifteen, living in a migrant hostel for a couple of years. Since then, he has built a diverse career, spanning rock and roll, pioneering music therapy, performing early folk and world music, university teaching, and authoring several books.
From a self-taught guitar player to an accomplished composer and multi-instrumentalist, Michael continues to explore the materials and processes of sound-making. Proficient in over thirty instruments, ranging from the ancient Welsh crwth to contemporary electronic sound-making devices, anything placed in his hands becomes a musical instrument.
Michael has toured extensively worldwide with Sirocco, the Atherton Table Band, and Southern Crossings, supported by Music Viva Australia. His impressive body of work includes numerous CD recordings, documentary film scores and television themes.
In recognition of his contributions, Michael was awarded a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce in 1998 and the Centenary Medal in 2001. Western Sydney University honoured him with the title, Emeritus Professor in 2012, for his distinguished contribution to teaching, research in the field of music and service to the University. In 2018, he was awarded Member of the Order of Australia, for his outstanding services to music education and society.
Host:
