Men Make 2

When

Wednesday 16 October from 6pm to 8pm

Cost

Starting from: $20.00

A 2-hour workshop aimed at but not exclusively for, men and boys. Men bring a mate, son, partner. Women bring a manbag. This two-part workshop involves playing around with maths and paper engineering. Fantastic conceptual making.

Part one: Hungry Birds. We focus on folding hyperbolic paraboloids (the shape of a pringle and possibly the universe) before attaching them to a mechatronic device we call the mini nest. Operating on an ultrasonic sensor, the nest reveals a squawking illuminated surprise when activated by movement. Is it a bird or is it a robot? You find out.

Part 2: Bucky’s Circus. Here, we explore Buckminster Fuller’s* cuboctahedron by folding paper units that connect to make a spherical form reminiscent of Bucky’s ‘vector equilibrium’. Big words. Small balls. Tons of fun.

*Richard Buckminster Fuller was an American architect, systems theorist, writer, designer, inventor, philosopher, and futurist best known for his geodesic domes.
