Join Powerhouse Museum volunteers for an inspiring and thought-provoking presentation exploring the power of communication in times of war. Through personal letters, secret codes and compelling public messaging, this talk delves into the unseen battles fought with words, symbols and technology, revealing how communication shaped the wartime experience.

Uncover the deeply personal letters of Anzac soldiers – raw, emotional and sometimes surprisingly hopeful. These letters connected soldiers to their loved ones, offering insight into the daily struggles of war and the ways they maintained morale amid unimaginable hardship.

Enter the world of wartime codebreaking, focusing on the groundbreaking Enigma machine. This revolutionary cipher device was used to send secret military messages, and its eventual decryption changed the course of World War 2. Discover how breakthroughs in communication technology influenced strategy and survival.

Examine the power of wartime public messaging, from recruitment posters to morale-boosting campaigns designed to inspire action and unite communities. These striking visual communications weren’t just art – they were powerful tools that influenced millions of people on both sides of conflict.

You can also ask questions and explore materials from the era.
